Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 in which he liked betting on various card games at a young age. He discovered himself getting very competitive in these card games as he was playing his dad. After finishing secondary school, Howard made a decision to place college on hold for a bit and moved to New York to participate in some big-time chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were tough as he played extensive hours and do not win a majority of the time. He made some extra cash by being an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he might boost his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to acquire more rest and focus more on the game.
The actual improvement in his skills happened when he started gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable gamblers would often play against each other. Howard had access into a number of the best minds in chess. With their help, Howard would hone his cunning thinking abilities. Howard applied these strategic concepts to the game of No-Limit holdem.
Howard Lederer also helped his sibling Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie was a great student of poker as she would consistently be asking questions about the right way to make the correct choice. He told Annie to head out to Vegas and compete in the WSOP competition. Annie is one of the greatest female players the poker arena today. He moved to Vegas in 1993 and participated in cash games for the next decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
